To make your adventure as seamless as possible, we provide a convenient pick-up from your accommodation directly to Omalos-Xyloskalo, the entrance of the gorge. After your long trek, you won’t have to worry about the return trip; we will be waiting to pick you up in the afternoon from Sfakia, Sougia, or Paleochora (depending on your ferry arrival) to drive you safely back to your stay.
Prepare yourself for an unforgettable adventure through the Samaria Gorge, the longest and most famous canyon in Europe. Located within Crete’s only National Park, this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a sanctuary for rare flora and the elusive Kri-Kri (Cretan wild goat). Stretching 16 kilometers from the White Mountains down to the Libyan Sea, it is a "must-do" for nature lovers.
The journey begins at 1,200 meters above sea level. As you descend, you’ll enter a world of ancient pine and cypress forests, crossing crystal-clear freshwater springs. Halfway through, we explore the abandoned stone village of Samaria, a hauntingly beautiful spot that offers a glimpse into the island’s rugged past.
The climax of the trek is the breathtaking Iron Gates (Sideroportes). At this point, the gorge’s massive walls rise 500 meters high, while the path narrows to just 3 meters wide. Walking through this natural cathedral is a truly humbling and awe-inspiring experience.
The path ends at the picturesque coastal village of Agia Roumeli. After your hike, there is no better feeling than diving into the cool waters of the Libyan Sea. Enjoy a well-deserved meal at a seaside taverna before taking the ferry to your designated pick-up point (Sfakia, Sougia, or Paleochora).
