Akrotiri Peninsula Tour
History, Spirituality & Seaside Charm

Our journey begins at the hilltop of Profitis Ilias, home to the Venizelos Tombs. This site offers the most breathtaking panoramic view of Chania. Beyond the scenery, it holds immense historical weight: it was the headquarters of the 1897 Cretan revolution for independence. Here, you will find the final resting place of Eleftherios Venizelos, Greece's most prominent statesman who shaped modern Greece, and his son Sophocles, a three-time Prime Minister.

Leaving the viewpoint, we drive through colorful local villages to reach the Agia Triada Monastery. Built in the 17th century by the Venetian monks Laurentios and Jeremias Tzagarolo, it is one of the most impressive and largest monastic complexes in Crete. A masterpiece of Cretan-Renaissance architecture, the monastery has survived centuries of raids and revolutions. Today, it remains a serene spiritual haven, also famous for its organic wine and olive oil production.

Next, we visit the fortress-like Gouverneto Monastery, established in 1537. Due to past pirate attacks, the complex was built with thick walls and four defensive towers at its corners. It is a place of deep devotion, featuring beautiful chapels dedicated to St. John the Hermit and the Ten Saints. The surrounding landscape is rugged and awe-inspiring, leading to the famous path of the "Bear Cave."

After exploring the historic monasteries, we head to the picturesque Marathi Beach on the northeastern side of Souda Bay. This sheltered bay features crystal-clear waters, a small fishing harbor, and views of the islets across the shore. It is the perfect spot for a break, where you can enjoy fresh seafood at the local seaside tavernas at excellent prices.

Our tour concludes at the majestic Ancient City of Aptera. Founded during the Minoan era, Aptera became one of Crete’s most powerful city-states in antiquity, commanding the entrance to Souda Bay. Walking through the ruins, you will witness layers of history—from Roman cisterns and ancient theaters to the Byzantine era. The site also features a 19th-century Ottoman fortress, offering a final, commanding view of the Cretan landscape.
